Applicants for a real estate qualifying broker's license in New Mexico must have completed 120 hours of instruction in approved real estate courses, specifically 30 hours of Real Estate Law, 30 hours of Real Estate Principles and Practices, 30 hours of Broker Basics and 30 hours of Brokerage Office Administration. The Real Estate Law, Real Estate Principles & Practices and the Broker Basics course must be completed prior to taking the licensing exam. In addition you must have been actively engaged in the real estate business as an Associate Broker or Salesperson for at least 2 of the past 5 years immediately prior to filing your application. We also suggest you attend our 16-hour State Exam Preparation course.

Real Estate Law, Real Estate Principles & Practices, and Broker Basics must all be completed prior to taking the state exam. If you are completing the program via correspondence all course work must be completed and turned in to our office prior to taking the state exam.

PSI administers the New Mexico Real Estate Licensing Exam in Albuquerque, Farmington, Las Cruces, Roswell and Santa Fe. They also offer the New Mexico exam in Durango, CO., Amarillo, TX, El Paso, TX, Lubbock, TX, and Midland, TX. Additionally, PSI has examination centers in many other regions across the United States. You may take this exam at any of these locations by call PSI and talk to a Customer Service Rep to schedule outside of New Mexico.

The exam is multiple-choice, and is divided into two separate portions. The 80-question "Broker National" portion, you must answer at least 60 correct questions in order to receive a passing grade and you have 120 minutes to complete this section. The 50-question " Broker State" portion, you must answer at least 38 correct questions in order to receive a passing grade and you have 60 minutes to complete this section.

The Eligibility/Examination Registration Form, with the appropriate exam fee and all supporting documents, must be submitted to PSI. The Eligibility/Examination Registration Form may be mailed or faxed. Upon approval by PSI, you will be sent and Eligibility Postcard including instructions for scheduling the examination. The Eligibility/Examination Registration Form will expire 1 year from the date PSI receives the original submission.

You may cancel and reschedule an examination appointment without forfeiting your fee if you cancellation notice is received 2 days prior to the scheduled examination date.

On the day of the examination, you should arrive at least 30 minutes before your appointment. If you arrive late, you may not be admitted to the examination site and you will forfeit your examination registration fee.

  • You must provide 2 forms of identification. One must be a valid form of government issued identification (driver’s license, state ID, passport, military ID), which bears your signature and has your photograph or a complete physical description. The second ID must have your signature and preprinted legal name. All identification provided must match the name on the Eligibility Letter.
  • Cell phones, pagers, purses, briefcases, personal belongings and children are not allowed I the examination site.
  • Only non-programmable calculators that are silent, battery-operated, do not have paper tape printing capabilities, and do not have a keyboard containing the alphabet will be allowed in the examination site.
  • No smoking, eating, or drinking will be allowed in the examination site.

Your official score report is delivered immediately upon completion of the exam.

An applicant for a New Mexico Qualifying Broker’s license must:

  1. Be at least 18 years old
  2. Be a legal resident of the United States
  3. Have been actively engaged in the real estate business as an Associate Broker of Salesperson for at least 2 of the past 5 years immediately prior to filing your application
  4. Complete the Broker Basics course
  5. Pass the New Mexico Brokers Licensing Exam
  6. Take the Brokerage Office Administration course required by the Real Estate Commission

You may apply for a license with the New Mexico Real Estate Commission after you have passed both the national and state specific examinations. To apply for a license, you must complete and mail the License Application Form for Salesperson, required documentation and appropriate fee(s) to the New Mexico Real Estate Commission. License applicants must apply within 6 months of passing their examination. The Real Estate Commission requires all applicants previously or currently licensed in real estate in another state or states to submit a license history verification from that state(s) licensing agency.

Required documentation includes:

  • Completed License Application Form
  • Criminal Background Check (from a source approved by the Commission)
  • All original score reports
  • Original certificate of completion of education (REC-134)
  • License fee - $240

All active real estate brokers are required to have errors and omission insurance. Licensees may obtain insurance from the Real Estate Commissions contract insurance carrier, Rice Insurance Services, or from another carrier provided the carrier certifies to the Commission that their coverage is equivalent to the contract program. License applicants will have 30 days from the date of their application to provide proof of errors and omissions insurance to the Commission.
